Awarded the Air Force Cross. During a brutal close-quarters battle, he repeatedly exposed himself to sniper and machine-gun fire to direct airstrikes and protect wounded teammates. While attached to a Special Forces team in Nangarhar Province, the element was ambushed by ISIS-K fighters in a heavily fortified valley. Pinned down and sustaining casualties, SSgt Germanovich sprinted through a hail of bullets to pull a wounded soldier to cover. Over the next several hours, he orchestrated continuous danger-close air support, dropping over 70 pieces of ordnance while engaging the enemy with his personal weapon. His unyielding courage and precision allowed the medical evacuation of his teammates and the successful repulse of the ambush.
