Despite facing mortar and artillery fire, he courageously secured burning pallets of mortars on an aircraft ramp, preventing a potential disaster and safeguarding the lives of aircrew and support personnel. For his extraordinary valor in the face of imminent danger, Sgt McCracken was awarded the Silver Star.
