In a moment of utmost bravery during the Vietnam War on February 25, 1968, Sergeant David McCracken risked his life to save others at Khe Sanh Combat Support Base. Despite facing mortar and artillery fire, he courageously secured burning pallets of mortars on an aircraft ramp, preventing a potential disaster and safeguarding the lives of aircrew and support personnel. For his extraordinary valor in the face of imminent danger, Sgt McCracken was awarded the Silver Star.
