MSgt John A. Chapman
24th STS (KIA 2002)A Combat Controller with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, MSgt Chapman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at the Battle of Takur Ghar in 2002. During a highly classified mission to insert a reconnaissance team onto the peak of Takur Ghar, MSgt Chapman's MH-47E Chinook helicopter was ambushed by heavy machine gun fire and an RPG. Following the subsequent crash landing and insertion, he heroically charged a dug-in Al-Qaeda bunker alone in knee-deep snow, neutralizing the occupants. After sustaining severe wounds and being temporarily incapacitated, MSgt Chapman regained consciousness and continued to engage the enemy from a bunker for over an hour. He ultimately sacrificed his own life to provide covering fire for an approaching Quick Reaction Force helicopter, saving the lives of the incoming rescue team. His extraordinary gallantry was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2018.
