SSgt Ralph Guthrie
23rd STSA Combat Controller with the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, SSgt Guthrie was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions during Operation Medusa (2006). Attached to a Special Forces ODA, he orchestrated a relentless volume of precision airstrikes, neutralizing critical enemy positions under intense fire. During the offensive to clear the Panjwai district of Taliban forces, his element was subjected to intense, coordinated ambushes involving rocket-propelled grenades and sustained machine-gun fire. Recognizing the gravity of the threat, SSgt Guthrie continually exposed himself to the barrage to establish line-of-sight with enemy fighting positions. He systematically directed waves of coalition aircraft, coordinating strafing runs and heavy ordinance drops that devastated the enemy strongholds. His tactical mastery of airpower not only broke the enemy's momentum but ensured the survival and success of the joint task force operating in the hostile valley.
