During the Vietnam War, Tech Sergeant Thomas J. Monley displayed remarkable gallantry at Khe Sanh Combat Support Base. Despite facing mortar and artillery fire, he bravely secured two burning pallets of mortars on an aircraft ramp, averting a potential disaster and saving the lives of aircrew and support personnel. His selfless actions in the face of imminent danger led to him receiving the Silver Star.
